Athens, Santorini
& Bangkok

2017 · Round-the-world ✦ On points & miles

The trip

Greek islands, then Thai temples.

This trip combined two very different worlds (the whitewashed caldera of Santorini and the golden temples of Bangkok) in a single award routing. Athens first for the Acropolis and the neighbourhood restaurants, then the ferry to Santorini for the sunsets and the cliffside walks, then east to Thailand.

Bangkok: Wat Arun at dawn, the Grand Palace, the klongs by longtail boat, the street markets. A trip that looks expensive on paper but came together on points and miles with very little cash out.

The route

Leg by leg

  • Leg 01 · YYZ → ATH

    Toronto to Athens

Overnight to Athens: into the city, the Acropolis, the Plaka neighbourhood, the rooftop restaurants with the Parthenon lit up at night. A few days before heading to the islands.

  • Leg 02 · Ferry · ATH → Santorini

    Santorini

The high-speed ferry from Piraeus to Thira: caldera views, the blue-domed churches of Oia, the black-sand beaches of Perissa. Sunset from the castle ruins above Oia. One of those views that earns the trip.

  • Leg 03 · ATH → BKK

    Athens to Bangkok

Eastbound to Suvarnabhumi: into the Bangkok heat, the tuk-tuks, and the temple bells. Wat Arun at first light, the Grand Palace, floating markets, and the Aloft Bangkok on Marriott points.

  • Leg 04 · BKK → YYZ

    Home from Bangkok

The long haul home via a connection: Thai Airways Royal Silk on the first segment, then connecting back to Toronto. The lounge in Bangkok makes the connection painless.
