The trip

Four countries. One trip. Almost no cash.

We flew from Toronto to the Maldives in a business-class suite (lie-flat, the whole way), then continued to Istanbul for a few days in the city before the Alps and the Amalfi Coast. The flights home routed back through Istanbul. Every segment planned, confirmed, and tracked in Trek.

The resort: a private-island overwater villa reached by a 20-minute seaplane from Malé. Chef's table dinner over the lagoon, a glass-floored suite above turquoise water: the kind of stay most people assume requires a full cash bill.

  • Leg 01 · YYZ → CMB → MLE

    Toronto to Malé via Colombo

    Business class outbound: a lie-flat pod from Toronto connecting through Sri Lanka's Bandaranaike airport, then a short hop into Malé. From Malé we boarded a Twin Otter seaplane for a 20-minute low-altitude flight over the atolls to the resort island.

  • Leg 02 · Maldives stay

    Overwater villa, private island

    Glass floor over the lagoon. Chef's table dinner on the deck at sunset. Morning snorkels from the villa stairs. The kind of hotel that earns its own itinerary leg.

  • Leg 03 · MLE → IST

    Malé to Istanbul

    Connecting through to Istanbul for a few days in the city: the Bosphorus, Kapalıçarşı, the Topkapi Palace and the Blue Mosque. Dinner in Beyoğlu, drinks in Karaköy.

  • Leg 04 · IST → ZRH → Interlaken

    Istanbul to the Swiss Alps

    Into Zürich, then by train into the Jungfrau region: Interlaken, Grindelwald, the Eiger north face. A few days of mountain quiet before the final push south.

  • Leg 05 · Italy → IST → YYZ

    Amalfi Coast, then home via Istanbul

    Rome, then south along the coast to Positano: stairs, clifftop terraces, boats to Capri. The return routing swung back through Istanbul before the overnight back to Toronto.
