The trip

Six countries. One award ticket.

This two-week European circuit ran from Toronto to Zürich (Swiss Air business class, one of the best hard products in the sky), then down through the Alps to Rome, along the Amalfi Coast, across to Florence, up to Prague, a few days in London, and out through Lisbon.

The entire outbound and return was redeemed on points. Positano and Capri by boat. Grindelwald with Eiger views from the window. Business class both directions, almost no cash outlay for the flights.

  • Leg 01 · YYZ → ZRH

    Toronto to Zürich: Swiss Air Business

    Swiss Air LX business class from Toronto to Zürich: flat-bed suite, champagne on the ground, and the Alps visible on approach. Consistently ranked among Europe's best hard products.

  • Leg 02 · Swiss Alps

    Grindelwald & Interlaken

    By train from Zürich into the Bernese Oberland: Interlaken, Grindelwald, the Jungfraujoch. The Eiger north face from the hotel window. A few days of clean mountain air before heading south.

  • Leg 03 · Italy

    Rome, the Amalfi Coast & Florence

    Rome for a few days (the Forum, the Colosseum, the neighbourhood trattorias), then south to the coast. Positano by ferry, a day trip to Capri, then north to Florence for the Uffizi and the Ponte Vecchio.

  • Leg 04 · Prague & London

    Central Europe, then the UK

    Prague's old town and castle district, then the Eurostar (or cheap flight) to London: museums, galleries, a few good dinners, and a night at a hotel covered by transferable points.

  • Leg 05 · LIS → YYZ

    Lisbon, then home

    Lisbon for the pastéis and the trams and the Alfama district, then the red-eye back to Toronto in business class: a flat bed for the overnight Atlantic crossing.
